The everyday meaning of “prompt”

Long before AI came along, “prompt” was an ordinary English word with a few related meanings. As a noun, a prompt is something that cues or reminds you to do something: the line whispered to an actor who has forgotten their words, a reminder that pops up on your phone, or the message on a screen asking you to type your password. As a verb, to prompt someone is to encourage or nudge them into action, as in “the rain prompted us to head home early.”

As an adjective, prompt means quick or on time. “A prompt reply” is one that arrives without delay, and “prompt payment” means paying when the bill is due.

The AI meaning grew out of that first sense. Your words are the cue, and the AI responds to them.

What a prompt means in AI

A prompt is what you say to an AI. If you have typed a question into ChatGPT, you have written a prompt. There is nothing technical about it, and you do not need special words or a secret format. The AI behind the chat window, a large language model, reads your prompt and writes a reply based on it.

The reason prompts get so much attention is that they make an enormous difference to what you get back. A good way to think about it: the AI is a capable assistant who will do exactly what you ask, but who takes you very literally and cannot read your mind. If you ask for “a summary,” you will get one, but it might be the wrong length, aimed at the wrong reader, or focused on the wrong points. If you ask for “a three-sentence summary for someone who has not read the article, focusing on the main argument,” you get something far closer to what you had in mind.

So a prompt is doing two jobs at once. It tells the AI what task to do, and it gives the context the AI needs to do that task well: who it is for, what style you want, and what a good answer looks like.

Examples of prompts

Here are a few vague prompts next to clearer versions of the same request. Both columns are prompts, but the right-hand ones give the AI far more to work with.

Help with my CV.	Here is my CV. Suggest three changes that would make it stronger for an office manager role, and explain each one.

Getting better at prompts

You do not need to get prompts perfect on the first try. Working with AI is a back-and-forth. You ask, you see what comes back, and you refine.
